Role Overview
Black Sheep Coffee is seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial and commercially driven Managing Director to lead the continued development and growth of our US business.
Based from our US headquarters in Miami, the Managing Director will take overall accountability for the day-to-day running and performance of the US business, initially across Florida and Texas. Reporting directly to the COO, with a dotted line to the Co-Founders & Co-CEOs, this will be the most senior Black Sheep Coffee leadership role based in the United States.
This is a genuine build-from-the-ground-up opportunity. The successful candidate will develop the infrastructure, leadership capability and operating model required to scale Black Sheep Coffee across the US, working closely with our established UK and global teams whilst progressively building an independent, capable and self-sufficient US organisation.
This role requires someone equally comfortable setting the long-term direction for the market and getting directly involved in the operational challenges of a fast-growing, early-stage business.
Key Responsibilities
US Business Leadership & Strategy
- Take overall accountability for the performance and day-to-day running of Black Sheep Coffee in the United States.
- Lead the development and execution of the US market growth strategy.
- Translate the wider Black Sheep Coffee strategy into clear US priorities and execution plans.
- Act as the senior leader and representative of Black Sheep Coffee within the US market.
- Provide regular updates to the COO and Co-Founders & Co-CEOs on performance, progress, risks and opportunities.
- Build the systems, processes and leadership structure required to support future growth across multiple US markets.
Commercial & P&L Performance
- Take accountability for delivering the agreed US business plan across sales, transactions, margin and profitability.
- Work closely with Finance on budgets, forecasts, reporting and commercial decision-making.
- Develop a detailed understanding of store-level economics and take action where performance falls below expectations.
- Drive improvements in sales, labour productivity, COGS, controllable costs and store profitability.
- Identify opportunities to improve revenue and profitability across pricing, product, channels, partnerships and operational efficiency.
- Maintain strong financial discipline as the market grows.
Operational Excellence
- Take overall accountability for the performance of corporate and franchise stores across the US.
- Ensure stores consistently deliver Black Sheep Coffee standards across customer experience, product quality, speed of service, availability, cleanliness and compliance.
- Establish clear operational rhythms, KPIs and performance management across the market.
- Spend significant time in stores and remain close to the operational reality of the business.
- Ensure underperforming stores have clear recovery plans with measurable actions.
- Build a scalable US Operations structure capable of supporting future growth.
Building the US Team
- Build, lead and develop a high-performing US leadership and support team.
- Recruit the capability required locally as the business scales.
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities and accountability across the US organisation.
- Develop succession plans and a strong pipeline of future leaders.
- Build an entrepreneurial, high-performance culture where people take ownership and move quickly.
- Empower teams to make decisions whilst maintaining strong accountability for delivery.
Building a Self-Sufficient US Organisation
- Progressively reduce day-to-day reliance on UK teams by building capability within the US.
- Determine which capabilities should be developed locally and which should remain global shared services.
- Establish strong ways of working between US teams and global functional leaders.
- Identify gaps in US capability early and put appropriate solutions in place.
- Create repeatable processes that enable the US business to scale into additional markets.
- Develop a US organisation capable of operating independently whilst remaining aligned with Black Sheep Coffee globally.
Growth & New Store Development
- Support the development of the US store pipeline across Florida, Texas and future markets.
- Partner with the Chief Growth Officer and wider Growth function, including Real Estate, Property Acquisition, Franchising, Construction and Operations, to support expansion of the US estate.
- Bring strong commercial and operational judgement into site selection and investment decisions.
- Ensure operational readiness across recruitment, training, supply chain, systems, marketing and opening activity for new stores.
- Ensure growth decisions balance pace, investment, operational capability and long-term returns.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Act as the principal point of coordination between the US business and Black Sheep Coffee's UK and global teams.
- Work closely with Operations, Marketing, Supply Chain, Product, Data & Analytics, IT, People, Quality Assurance, Construction & Facilities and Growth.
- Ensure US requirements are represented within global decision-making.
- Maintain strong partnerships with global functional leaders whilst holding local teams accountable for execution.
- Resolve cross-functional blockers quickly and keep activity focused on US business priorities.
Finance, Governance & Compliance
- Work closely with Finance to maintain strong financial controls and reporting.
- Ensure the business operates within agreed budgets, approval processes and governance requirements.
- Partner with Black Sheep Coffee's global Legal function on contracts, employment matters and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local requirements.
- Maintain high standards across food safety, health & safety, employment practices and regulatory compliance.
- Identify and escalate significant commercial, operational or compliance risks early.
Brand, Customer & Market Development
- Protect and develop the Black Sheep Coffee brand within the US.
- Ensure the US customer proposition remains distinctive, commercially relevant and consistent with the global brand.
- Develop a strong understanding of US customers, competitors and market trends.
- Work closely with Marketing and Product to identify opportunities that drive brand awareness, transactions and sales.
- Develop external relationships and partnerships that support Black Sheep Coffee's growth and profile.
- Translate customer feedback and market insight into tangible business improvements.
